Marine Insurance

It all begins with transportation.

We’re here to help.

Cargo on the seas, and goods in transit on the way to final destinations, are the lifeblood which allows trade and commerce to prosper. In fact, the first types of insurance cover were created to provide for maritime protection in the 18th century as sea-faring merchants helped shape the modern economy as we know it.

Insurance products for marine and transportation related products, a very specialised area, are written through our marine division, Nautical. Whether you’re an established corporate intermediary or a small independent broker expanding your business into the marine space, we have the ability and expertise to support you and your business through the following covers:

Marine Cargo:
We provide protection for general cargo which is generally shipped in containers (where standard and comprehensive covers usually apply), Specialized Cargo such as perishable commodities and Bulk Cargo (where specific cover is put in place). Such policies will, if required and appropriate, cover the entire import or export, whether by sea, land or air from the seller’s to the buyer’s premises – including storage on the way if incidental to the shipment.

Stock Throughput (STP):
This is a specialised policy which embraces the cargo risk, inland transit risk and risks associated with the storage of stock. Goods are usually insured from the supplier or manufacturer until placed in the hands of the end customer.

Goods in Transit (GIT):
We offer protection against loss, destruction, or damage to goods whilst they are in transit - from the time of leaving the insured’s premises to final delivery. The policy also protects the insured from liability during loading and unloading of the goods, and temporary housing in the course of transit. The cover is available for individuals or companies transporting goods.

Pleasure Craft:
We provide cover for various types of small craft for private use. These range from small sailing dinghies through to ocean-going yachts and catamarans. We also insure power-craft such as wet-bikes, rubber ducks and large ski-boats.

Carriers’ Liability:
This cover is designed to protect carriers who operate using approved consignment notes or other contracts of carriage against their liability, in terms of these contracts, for loss or damage to their customers’ goods.

Warehouseman’s Liability:
Warehouse owners and operators can be held liable if the goods being stored in their warehouse if destroyed, damaged or stolen. Thus, warehouseman’s liability insurance exists to protect owners and operators against the costs of legal defense, damage awards and other expenses related to a damage claim.

Ship Repairers Liability:
This marine policy is designed for ship repairers and provides care, custody & control for damage to vessels under construction, repair or alteration by the Insured. Cover can also be added to include loss or damage to a vessel while the Insured is involved with sea trials, transit of the vessel by the Insured to/from the owner, liability of the Insured’s workmen while operating at third party locations.

Stevedores’ Liability:
Provides liability insurance including cover for care, custody, and control (CCC) for stevedoring operations related to the exposures arising from the loading and unloading of cargo from vessels. Stevedoring organizations are responsible for the damage to the vessel, the cargo being loaded or unloaded, and surrounding property like other vessels, docks, and wharves caused by the negligent acts of their employees.

Freight Forwarders Liability:
This cover (along with the appropriate allied covers) provide coverage to a freight forwarder or load broker for their liability for physical loss of or damage to customers’ cargo and for their consequential loss resulting from such loss or damage.

Marine Operators Liability:
This is specialised cover designed to provide terminal operators with cover for damage to cargo while in their care, custody and control for purposes of import and export.
